Whether you are a DIY pro or a novice, there are some household issues that seem like more trouble than they are worth. With a little advance planning, some of the most annoying household issues can be resolved with a few simple fixes.
Here are two projects you can tackle in an hour or less that will be well worth the investment of time and energy: Squeaky or Sticky Doors This is one of those issues that you hear over and over again every time you open or close the door, but might not be annoying enough to invest the time in fixing. When you want to put a stop to the squeak or stick for good, the first step is to understand exactly where the problem is coming from. If your door is sticking, rub colored chalk around it, then open and close it and look for the chalk marks to determine where it is sticking. From there, use a dremel or small sander to shave down the door and give it a better fit in the door frame. In the case of a squeaky door, it is most likely caused by hinges that are not properly lubricated. Fix that by rubbing petroleum jelly on them. It’s not a permanent fix and will likely need to be reapplied, but it should be enough to stop the squeaking in the short term. Stained Bathtub No matter how clean you keep your shower or bathtub, stains build up over time from hard water and continual use. Contrary to what you might think, removing those stains does not mean spending hours scrubbing or harsh chemicals. For an easy nontoxic option, combine equal amounts of cream of tartar and baking soda with lemon juice to form a paste. Rub the mixture into the stain with your fingers or a soft cloth. Let it sit for about half an hour and then rinse well with hot water. Repeat as needed until the stains are gone.
